Day 27: Walk by Faith, Not by Sight

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, You call us to live by faith and not by sight. Yet how easily we are swayed by what we see with our physical eyes instead of trusting in Your invisible yet powerful presence. Today as we reflect on walking by faith, strengthen our inner beings to rely on Your faithfulness rather than our circumstances or feelings.

Deepen within us a joyful anticipation of Your kingdom that is unseen. Give us eyes of faith to see Your hand at work even when it seems hidden. As we consider Your Word, show us any areas where sight has dimmed our trust. Replace doubts with an assurance of Your goodness rooted in Christ.

By Your Spirit, renew our willingness to follow wherever You lead us, whether on familiar or unfamiliar paths. Form within us persevering hope in Your promises that endures despite what is seen with natural vision. We ask You would use this time to strengthen our faith and reignite our zeal to live fully for You each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

For we walk by faith, not by sight:

Reflection:

For the believer, faith must come before sight. As 2 Corinthians 5:7 declares, we are called to walk by faith, not by sight. Our faith finds its foundation not in what is seen but in the invisible yet omnipotent God and His trustworthy promises. Hebrews 11 reminds us of saints throughout history who pleased God through living lives anchored in faith rather than appearances. Noah constructed an ark on dry land based solely on divine warning (Heb 11:7). Abraham went where God directed though unfamiliar with the destination (Heb 11:8). Even when circumstances seem bleak, faith fixes its eyes on what cannot be observed – God’s sovereign plan and coming ultimate victory as proclaimed in Romans 8:28 and Revelation 19-22. Faith believes what it cannot see as expressed in Hebrews 11:1. It was by faith that God created all things visible out of the invisible (Hebrews 11:3). And it is through continuing in Christ by faith, not wavering perception, that we are forgiven and pleasing to Him (Romans 1:17). As we face struggles, may we emulate those who walked boldly with God though unseeing. May clinging to His eternal promises in Scripture nourish steadfast faith, not fleeting sights and feelings. Our omnipotent Savior alone is worthy of complete trust.

2 We may not touch His hands and side, nor follow where He trod; but in His promise we rejoice and cry, “My Lord and God!”

4 That, when our life of faith is done, in realms of clearer light, may we behold You as You are with full and endless sight.

Applying and Taking Action

Spending time reflecting prepares us to actively walk by faith in daily life. Consider these steps:

  • What promise from God will you stand on through prayer and obedience this week, whatever your circumstances?
  • Look for an opportunity to encourage another whose trust seems shaken by what is seen. Share how meditating on truth strengthened your vision.
  • Ask God to reveal any areas where perception of trials has diminished faith. Exchange worry for rest in His goodness.
  • Determine to freely offer forgiveness or service to someone beyond what seems natural or fair based on faith in Christ.
  • Praise God through song for who He is and what cannot be seen – His faithful character, victory over sin and death.

Responding to promptings of the Spirit nurtures persevering faith anchored in God alone. His grace enables continuing obedience through every season, seen or unseen.

Gracious God, we thank You for strengthening our vision of faith through time in Your Word today. When uncertainty and doubt try to sway our trust, Your eternal promises alone anchor our souls. As we leave this space, may our steps be guided by faith in You rather than what is seen or felt.

Where fears or worries arise this week from fleeting perceptions, turn our eyes again to who You are and what cannot be seen – Your goodness, power, and plan unfolding. Help us speak words and make choices that point beyond all appearances to Your unchanging character.

By Your Spirit dwelling within, give us brave obedience to please You through every season whether darkened or bright. May our lives radiate confidence in You alone as defender, deliverer and friend. In Jesus’ name we pray, that He would be glorified as we walk each day by faith according to His truth and not by sight. Amen.
