Weekly Creative Devotional

Opening Prayer

Almighty God, as we explore Mark’s Gospel this week, guide us to a deeper understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. Grant us the courage to face challenges and the strength to live according to Your will. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

READING

Mark 8:34

And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “Whoever would come after me must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

REFLECTION

Imagine a crowd gathered around Jesus, eager for His teachings. Suddenly, He makes a startling statement: to be His disciple requires self-denial, carrying a cross, and following Him. This isn’t a casual invitation; it’s a call to a life transformed, one that may involve sacrifice and hardship.

Consider:

  • What does “denying yourself” mean in the context of following Jesus?
  • Are there areas in your life that might need to be surrendered to God’s will?

MEMORIZING THE VERSE

Let Mark 8:34 (ESV) be your guiding light this week: “And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “Whoever would come after me must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Reflect on the commitment Jesus asks from His followers.

CREATING AND MEDITATING

Choose a creative activity: Option 1: Create a “crossroads” collage. Use images and words to represent the path you are currently on and the path of following Jesus more closely. Consider the potential sacrifices and blessings associated with each path. Option 2: Spend time in quiet prayer. Ask God to reveal any areas in your life where you might be clinging to control. Surrender these areas to Him and commit to following His lead, even when it’s difficult.

TAKING ACTION AND APPLYING

Following Jesus isn’t always easy, but it’s a journey filled with purpose and joy. This week, choose one way to step outside your comfort zone and live according to Jesus’ teachings. Perhaps it’s showing forgiveness, volunteering your time, or simply prioritizing prayer and Bible study.

Hymn

Take Up Thy Cross, the Savior Said

1 Take up your cross, the Savior said, If you would my disciple be; Deny yourself, the world forsake, And humbly follow after me.

2 Take up your cross, be not ashamed! Let not disgrace your spirit fill! For God himself endured to die Upon a cross, on Calvary’s hill.

3 Take up your cross, which gives you strength, Which makes your trembling spirit brave: ‘Twill guide you to a better home And lead to vict’ry o’er the grave.

4 Take up your cross, and follow Christ, Nor think till death to lay it down; For only they who bear the cross May hope to wear the glorious crown.

Closing Prayer

Dear God, we acknowledge the challenges of following You, but we also recognize the immense blessings. Give us the strength to deny ourselves, pick up our cross, and walk faithfully in Your footsteps. May our lives be a reflection of Your love and a testament to Your power. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

ABOUT OUR MINISTRY

We are a non-denominational Bible-believing Christian Ministry trained and equipped at the Christian Leaders Institute. Even though our Ministry is based on God's Word, the Bible, you need to approach our teachings like the Bereans and always study the Bible yourself to see if what we teach is aligned with what is written in the Bible.

Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11 NIV

We are only humans who 'stumble in many ways' (James 3:2) and we only 'know in part and we prophesy in part' (1 Corinthians 13:9).
