Weekly Creative Devotional

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your mercy that reaches us even in our lowest moments. When we cry out to You, You hear us. Help us to remember that no situation is too deep, no place too far, for Your grace to reach. Thank You for never giving up on us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

READING

Jonah 2:1–2

Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying, ‘I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice.’

REFLECTION

Jonah ran from God’s call and found himself in the depths – literally inside a fish. Yet from that dark, terrifying place, he cried out to God. And God heard him.

This passage reminds us that it’s never too late to turn to the Lord. Even in our mess, in our fear, in our rebellion – God hears. Jonah’s prayer came from the deep, and God’s mercy reached down.

No matter where you are today – emotionally, spiritually, or physically – God is near. He listens. He redeems. He can bring us up and out, just like He did with Jonah.

MEMORIZING THE VERSE

Verse to Remember
Jonah 2:2 –  ‘I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me;’ (ESV)

Creative Prompt: Write this verse on a torn piece of paper, representing distress or brokenness, and then glue it into your journal or prayer notebook. Around it, draw waves or dark water – but also draw rays of light breaking through to remind you that God’s mercy reaches the deepest places.

CREATING AND MEDITATING

Choose a creative activity:

Option 1: Deep Cry Art Journal
Use blue and gray tones to create a visual representation of the “belly of the fish” – a place of darkness. Then add a bright light or words of hope breaking through. Let this be a picture of prayer rising and being answered.

Option 2: Personal Psalm Writing
Write your own version of Jonah’s prayer. Be honest. Cry out to God in your own words from a place where you need help or healing. Don’t worry about structure – just let it flow like a psalm from your heart.

TAKING ACTION AND APPLYING

This week, reach out to someone who may be in a hard place. Offer them prayer, a listening ear, or a note of encouragement. Share your own testimony of how God met you in your “belly of the fish.” Let them know they are not alone, and that God hears.

Hymn

I To The Lord In My Distress

2 I to the LORD in my distress Cry’d earnestly, and He gave ear; Out from hell’s belly then I cry’d, And He my voice did kindly hear.

3 For down into the hideous deeps, And midst of seas, Thou didst me cast; The floods encompass’d me, and all Thy waves and billows o’er me pass’d.

4 I then said, I was cast away Quite from the sight of thy blest eyes, Yet tow’rds thy temple i will look, And to Thee there direct my cries.

5 The waters to my sinking soul Pierc’d and encompaas’d me around; That depths all round enclosed me, The weeds about my head were bound.

6 To mountains bottoms I went down, Earth’s bars for ever me beset; Yet LORD my God, Thou hast my life Brought up out of the horrid pit.

7 When my sunk soul fainted in me, JEHOVAH then remember’d I; And then my pray’r rose up to Thee, Into thy holy place on high.

8 They their own mercies sadly leave, who look to lying vanities; But with the voice of giving thanks, To Thee I’ll praises sacrifice.

9 Whatever I in trouble vow;d, To pay I readily accord; For all salvation ever comes From the most kind and sov’reign LORD.

Closing Prayer

Gracious Father,
Thank You for hearing us even when we feel far away or undeserving. Thank You for Your relentless mercy that follows us into every depth. Teach us to cry out to You and trust that You always listen. Help us to be messengers of that same mercy to others. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

ABOUT OUR MINISTRY

We are a non-denominational Bible-believing Christian Ministry trained and equipped at the Christian Leaders Institute and Axx Bible College. Even though our Ministry is based on God's Word, the Bible, you need to approach our teachings like the Bereans and always study the Bible yourself to see if what we teach is aligned with what is written in the Bible.

Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11 NIV

We are only humans who 'stumble in many ways' (James 3:2) and we only 'know in part and we prophesy in part' (1 Corinthians 13:9).
