Weekly Creative Devotional

Opening Prayer

Almighty God, on this Memorial Day, we gather with hearts filled with gratitude and solemn remembrance. We honor the brave men and women who laid down their lives for our freedom. Grant us the wisdom to understand their sacrifice and the courage to carry on their legacy. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

READING

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

REFLECTION

Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have fallen in service to their country. These heroes answered the call, leaving behind loved ones and dreams to protect the values we hold dear. Their sacrifice echoes through history, a testament to the enduring power of love and courage.

MEMORIZING THE VERSE

Let John 15:13 (ESV) be a guiding light this Memorial Day: “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Reflect on the immense love and dedication these fallen heroes embodied.

CREATING AND MEDITATING

Choose a creative activity: Option 1: Visit a war memorial or cemetery. Pay your respects by placing flowers or a flag. Reflect on the stories etched in stone, the lives lost, and the families forever changed. Option 2: Create a “gratitude jar.” Throughout the week, write down things you’re grateful for, including the peace secured by veterans. On Memorial Day, read these reminders of the sacrifices that made them possible.

TAKING ACTION AND APPLYING

Here are some ways to honor the fallen:

  • Volunteer at a veteran’s organization.
  • Learn about a specific soldier’s story and share it with others.
  • Donate to a charity that supports veterans and their families.
  • Thank a veteran for their service.

Hymn

God of Our Fathers

1 God of our fathers, known of old, Lord of our far-flung battle line, Beneath whose awful hand we hold Dominion over palm and pine: Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget, lest we forget!

2 The tumult and the shouting dies; The captains and the kings depart; Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice, An humble and a contrite heart: Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget, lest we forget!

3 Far called our navies melt away. On dune and headland sinks the fire; Lo, all our pomp of yesterday Is one with Nineveh and Tyre! Judge of the nations, spare us yet, Lest we forget, lest we forget!

4 If, drunk with sight of power, we loose Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe, Such boasting as the Gentiles use Or lesser breeds without the law: Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget, lest we forget!

5 For heathen heart that puts her trust In reeking tube and iron shard; All valiant dust that builds on dust, And guarding calls not Thee to guard: For frantic boast and foolish word, Thy mercy on Thy people, Lord!

Words: Rudyard Kipling, Music: John Henry Gower

Closing Prayer

Dearest God, as we remember the fallen on this Memorial Day, we honor their sacrifice with profound gratitude. May their memory inspire us to cherish the freedom they fought for and to live lives worthy of their courage. Grant solace to the families who mourn their loss, and fill us all with the strength to carry on their legacy of peace and justice. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

ABOUT OUR MINISTRY

We are a non-denominational Bible-believing Christian Ministry trained and equipped at the Christian Leaders Institute and Axx Bible College. Even though our Ministry is based on God's Word, the Bible, you need to approach our teachings like the Bereans and always study the Bible yourself to see if what we teach is aligned with what is written in the Bible.

Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11 NIV

We are only humans who 'stumble in many ways' (James 3:2) and we only 'know in part and we prophesy in part' (1 Corinthians 13:9).
