Joy According to God’s Word

“Today I woke up with so much joy in my heart.” “You are a joy to work with.” “My kids are my greatest joy in life.” These are expressions that we have either said ourselves or have heard from others. Let’s find out what the Bible has to say about joy.

JOY

According to Cambridge Dictionary, the word ‘joy’ has the following meaning:

joy (noun)

great happiness or pleasure:
example: My heart was full of pure joy.
A joy is a person or thing that causes happiness:
examples: His daughters were the joys of his life. She’s a joy to work with. According to the Bible joy is an attitude or quality of delight and happiness which is based on the work of the triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. While joy can be experienced in many situations, the ultimate joy is only found in God’s presence.

The joy of God

God rejoices in the well-being and faithfulness of believers and when sinners repent and convert. God brings joy to believers, who rejoice in His presence and faithfulness.
God is the source of joy
Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 34:7 And Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. 1 Samuel 2:1 O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” Nehemiah 1:11 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. Isaiah 61:10 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. John 15:11
God rejoices in the restoration of his people
I will rejoice in doing them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all my heart and all my soul. Jeremiah 32:41 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:4-5 I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. Isaiah 65:19 Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he my darling child? For as often as I speak against him, I do remember him still. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him, declares the Lord. Jeremiah 31:20 The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. Zephaniah 3:17
Joy can be found in the heavenly presence of God
Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place. 1 Chronicles 16:27 “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Job 38:4-7  then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of man. Proverbs 8:30-31 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. Luke 15:7
Causes of God’s joy
His own works
but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:24
His chosen servant
“Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. Matthew 12:18 Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. Isaiah 42:1 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.” Hebrews 1:9
Jesus Christ
and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Mark 1:11   and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Luke 3:22 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” Matthew 17:5
The restored temple
Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the Lord. Haggai 1:8
His people and their worship
For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation. Let the godly exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands, to execute vengeance on the nations and punishments on the peoples, to bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron, to execute on them the judgment written! This is honor for all his godly ones. Praise the Lord! Psalm 149:4-9 I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. This will please the Lord more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. Psalm 69:30-31
Repentance
The Lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your cattle and in the fruit of your ground. For the Lord will again take delight in prospering you, as he took delight in your father’s, Deuteronomy 30:9
Obedience, honesty and integrity
And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. 1 Samuel 15:22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight. Proverbs 12:22 I know, my God, that you test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you. 1 Chronicles 29:17 His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love. Psalm 147:10-11 A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight. Proverbs 11:1 Those of crooked heart are an abomination to the Lord, but those of blameless ways are his delight. Proverbs 11:20
God’s face shining on His people shows His divine pleasure and joy
the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; Numbers 6:25 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, Psalm 67:1 Restore us, O Lord God of hosts! Let your face shine, that we may be saved! Psalm 80:19 Make your face shine upon your servant, and teach me your statutes. Psalm 119:135
God’s face is against evil and He shows it in His displeasure
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. Psalm 34:16 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” 1 Peter 3:12

The Joy of Jesus Christ

When we have Jesus Christ in our life, we have joy. We can rejoice at the coming of our Lord and Savior and all the benefits He is giving us. Jesus Christ’s joy comes from God. His joy comes from His intimate relationship with His Father and the Holy Spirit.   In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. Luke 10:21 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,     the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,     the Spirit of counsel and might,     the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see,     or decide disputes by what his ears hear, Isaiah 11:2-3 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:16-17 Behold my servant, whom I uphold,     my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him;     he will bring forth justice to the nations. Isaiah 42:1 You make known to me the path of life;     in your presence there is fullness of joy;     at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 16:11
His joy comes from his awareness of God’s purposes.
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2 And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” John 8:29
Jesus Christ’s coming brings great joy
His birth brings great joy
And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:10-11 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. Matthew 2:10 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Luke 1:44 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. Luke 2:20 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,  “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace,     according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation      that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,  a light for revelation to the Gentiles,     and for glory to your people Israel.” Luke 2:28-32
His resurrection and ascension bring joy.
Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. John 16:20-22 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Matthew 28:8-9 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” Luke 24:40-41 And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God. Luke 24:50-53 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. John 20:20
Jesus Christ gives joy to his people.
He brings joy to His disciples.
But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. John 17:13 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,     because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor;     he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives,     and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord‘s favor,     and the day of vengeance of our God;     to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion—     to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning,     the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness,     the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. Isaiah 61:1-3 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. John 15:11 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Romans 12:12 so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. Philippians 1:26
Being in His presence is likened to the joy of a wedding.
Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. Matthew 9:14-15 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Matthew 25:1-10 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. John 3:29 Let us rejoice and exult     and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come,     and his Bride has made herself ready; Revelation 19:7
To know Jesus Christ brings great joy to others.
Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. Luke 15:7 I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, Matthew 8:11 Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Luke 15:10 And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’” Luke 15:31-32 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” John 8:56

The Joy of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit brings joy to believers, giving them an inner contentment and happiness which is not dependent upon external circumstances.
The Holy Spirit enables the Messiah to bring joy.
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,     because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor;     he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives,     and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord‘s favor,     and the day of vengeance of our God;     to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion—     to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning,     the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness,     the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. Isaiah 61:1-3 The people who walked in darkness     have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,     on them has light shone. You have multiplied the nation;     you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you     as with joy at the harvest,     as they are glad when they divide the spoil. Isaiah 9:2-3
The Holy Spirit gives joy to those anticipating Jesus Christ’s birth.
And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” Luke 1:41-45 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,     for he has visited and redeemed his people Luke 1:67-68
The Holy Spirit gives joy to Jesus Christ.
In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. Luke 10:21 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you     with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.” Hebrews 1:9
The Holy Spirit gives joy to disciples even in the face of opposition.
And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. Acts 13:52 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, Acts 16:25 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, 1 Thessalonians 1:6 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 1 Peter 4:13-14
Joy is included in the fruit of the Spirit
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Galatians 5:22 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Roman’s 15:13
Believers rejoice in the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work.
As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.” Acts 11:15-18 When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord. Acts 11:23-24

Joy in humans

As humans we experience joy naturally in many areas of our life and in human relationships. As believers we experience joy in response to all that God has done for us.
Poetic images of joy in creation
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;     let the sea roar, and all that fills it;     let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy     before the Lord, for he comes,     for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness,     and the peoples in his faithfulness. Psalm 96:11-13 The pastures of the wilderness overflow,     the hills gird themselves with joy, the meadows clothe themselves with flocks,     the valleys deck themselves with grain,     they shout and sing together for joy. Psalm 65:12-13 The north and the south, you have created them;     Tabor and Hermon joyously praise your name. Psalm 89:12 The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;     the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus; it shall blossom abundantly     and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,     the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord,     the majesty of our God. Isaiah 35:1-2
Joy arising from specific circumstances
Joy because of the birth of children
But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. Luke 1:13-15 Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. And Leah said, “Happy am I! For women have called me happy.” So she called his name Asher. Genesis 30:12-13 And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. Luke 1:58
Joy because of victory and deliverance
And Jethro rejoiced for all the good that the Lord had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians. Exodus 18:9 As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments. 1 Samuel 18:6 And when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces with him, they rejoiced. Jeremiah 41:13 Then Ephraim shall become like a mighty warrior,     and their hearts shall be glad as with wine. Their children shall see it and be glad;     their hearts shall rejoice in the Lord. Zechariah 10:7 Joy because of the behaviour of others The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,     and good news refreshes the bones. Proverbs 15:30

The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice;     he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. Let your father and mother be glad;     let her who bore you rejoice. Proverbs 23:24-25 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. Matthew 14:6-7

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. Hebrews 13:17

Joy because of God’s blessings in everyday life Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God. For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart. Ecclesiastes 5:19-20
Joy arising from relationships
Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved. Philippians 4:1 Let your fountain be blessed,     and rejoice in the wife of your youth, Proverbs 5:18 Draw me after you; let us run.     The king has brought me into his chambers.
Others
We will exult and rejoice in you;     we will extol your love more than wine;     rightly do they love you. Song of Solomon 1:4 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15 For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you. Philemon 7
God’s people find their joy in Him
You have put more joy in my heart     than they have when their grain and wine abound. Psalm 4:7 Though the fig tree should not blossom,     nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail     and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold     and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord;     I will take joy in the God of my salvation. Habakkuk 3:17-18

Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you. Philippians 3:1 Glory in his holy name;     let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice! 1 Chronicles 16:10 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Philippians 4:4
God himself gives joy to his people
And they offered great sacrifices that day and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy; the women and children also rejoiced. And the joy of Jerusalem was heard far away. Nehemiah 12:43 He will yet fill your mouth with laughter,     and your lips with shouting. Job 8:21 For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. Ecclesiastes 2:26 You have multiplied the nation;     you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you     as with joy at the harvest,     as they are glad when they divide the spoil. Isaiah 9:3 “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.” Acts 14:15-17
Reasons for God’s people to know joy
God’s deliverance
And Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the Lord;     my horn is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies,     because I rejoice in your salvation. 1 Samuel 2:1
God’s goodness

Repentance
Receive instruction from his mouth,     and lay up his words in your heart. If you return to the Almighty you will be built up;     if you remove injustice far from your tents, if you lay gold in the dust,     and gold of Ophir among the stones of the torrent-bed, then the Almighty will be your gold     and your precious silver. For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty     and lift up your face to God. Job 22:22-26

Honouring the Sabbath
“If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,     from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight     and the holy day of the Lord honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways,     or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly; then you shall take delight in the Lord,     and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,     for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” Isaiah 58:13-14
God’s words
Your words were found, and I ate them,     and your words became to me a joy     and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name,     Lord, God of hosts. Jeremiah 15:16

They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion,     and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord, over the grain, the wine, and the oil,     and over the young of the flock and the herd; their life shall be like a watered garden,     and they shall languish no more. Jeremiah 31:12
Recognition by God
And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.     For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me,     and holy is his name. Luke 1:46-49
 Trusting God
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

The Joy of Israel

Joy can be found in and through Israel’s life of worship.
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!     Serve the Lord with gladness!     Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God!     It is he who made us, and we are his;     we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving,     and his courts with praise!     Give thanks to him; bless his name! Psalm 100:1-4 On the day of your gladness also, and at your appointed feasts and at the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings. They shall be a reminder of you before your God: I am the Lord your God.” Numbers 10:10 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: The fast of the fourth month and the fast of the fifth and the fast of the seventh and the fast of the tenth shall be to the house of Judah seasons of joy and gladness and cheerful feasts. Therefore love truth and peace. Zechariah 8:19 “On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you shall celebrate the feast of the Lord seven days. On the first day shall be a solemn rest, and on the eighth day shall be a solemn rest. And you shall take on the first day the fruit of splendid trees, branches of palm trees and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days. You shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord for seven days in the year. It is a statute forever throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month. Leviticus 23:39-41 And the people of Israel who were present at Jerusalem kept the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with great gladness, and the Levites and the priests praised the Lord day by day, singing with all their might to the Lord. And Hezekiah spoke encouragingly to all the Levites who showed good skill in the service of the Lord. So they ate the food of the festival for seven days, sacrificing peace offerings and giving thanks to the Lord, the God of their fathers. Then the whole assembly agreed together to keep the feast for another seven days. So they kept it for another seven days with gladness. 2 Chronicles 30:21-23
Joy expressed by the individual as a result of faith
I have set the Lord always before me;     because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;     my flesh also dwells secure. Psalm 16:8-9 This would be my comfort;     I would even exult in pain unsparing,     for I have not denied the words of the Holy One. Job 6:10 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;     let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them,     that those who love your name may exult in you. Psalm 5:11 My lips will shout for joy,     when I sing praises to you;     my soul also, which you have redeemed. Psalm 71:23 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;     my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;     he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,     and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. Isaiah 61:10
Joy experienced by the nation as the people of God
May we shout for joy over your salvation,     and in the name of our God set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions! Psalm 20:5 And the ransomed of the Lord shall return     and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;     they shall obtain gladness and joy,     and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Isaiah 51:11 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion,     and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord, over the grain, the wine, and the oil,     and over the young of the flock and the herd; their life shall be like a watered garden,     and they shall languish no more. Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance,     and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy;     I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow. Jeremiah 31:12-13 And you shall rejoice in all the good that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you. Deuteronomy 26:11 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!     When God restores the fortunes of his people,     let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad. Psalm 53:6
Joy predicted in prophetic assurances of restoration and blessing
For the Lord comforts Zion;     he comforts all her waste places and makes her wilderness like Eden,     her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness will be found in her,     thanksgiving and the voice of song. Isaiah 51:3 “For you shall go out in joy     and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you     shall break forth into singing,     and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Isaiah 55:12 “Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,     all you who love her; rejoice with her in joy,     all you who mourn over her; that you may nurse and be satisfied     from her consoling breast; that you may drink deeply with delight     from her glorious abundance.” Isaiah 66:10-11 Again I will build you, and you shall be built,     O virgin Israel! Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines     and shall go forth in the dance of the merrymakers. Jeremiah 31:4 “Fear not, O land;     be glad and rejoice,     for the Lord has done great things! Fear not, you beasts of the field,     for the pastures of the wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit;     the fig tree and vine give their full yield. “Be glad, O children of Zion,     and rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given the early rain for your vindication;     he has poured down for you abundant rain,     the early and the latter rain, as before. Joel 2:21-23
Joy at times of national celebration
The anointing of kings
There Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!” And all the people went up after him, playing on pipes, and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth was split by their noise. 1 Kings 1:39-40 And they offered sacrifices to the Lord, and on the next day offered burnt offerings to the Lord, 1,000 bulls, 1,000 rams, and 1,000 lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. And they ate and drank before the Lord on that day with great gladness.
Solomon Anointed King
And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and they anointed him as prince for the Lord, and Zadok as priest. 1 Chronicles 29:21-22 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she went into the house of the Lord to the people. And when she looked, there was the king standing by his pillar at the entrance, and the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets, and the singers with their musical instruments leading in the celebration. And Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, “Treason! Treason!” 2 Chronicles 23:12-13
The consecration of the temple
The same day the king consecrated the middle of the court that was before the house of the Lord, for there he offered the burnt offering and the grain offering and the fat pieces of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar that was before the Lord was too small to receive the burnt offering and the grain offering and the fat pieces of the peace offerings. So Solomon held the feast at that time, and all Israel with him, a great assembly, from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of Egypt, before the Lord our God, seven days. On the eighth day he sent the people away, and they blessed the king and went to their homes joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that the Lord had shown to David his servant and to Israel his people. 1 Kings 8:64-66
Fire from Heaven
As soon as Solomon finished his prayer, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. And the priests could not enter the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord filled the Lord‘s house. When all the people of Israel saw the fire come down and the glory of the Lord on the temple, they bowed down with their faces to the ground on the pavement and worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying, “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”
The Dedication of the Temple
Then the king and all the people offered sacrifice before the Lord. King Solomon offered as a sacrifice 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep. So the king and all the people dedicated the house of God. The priests stood at their posts; the Levites also, with the instruments for music to the Lord that King David had made for giving thanks to the Lord—for his steadfast love endures forever—whenever David offered praises by their ministry; opposite them the priests sounded trumpets, and all Israel stood. And Solomon consecrated the middle of the court that was before the house of the Lord, for there he offered the burnt offering and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar Solomon had made could not hold the burnt offering and the grain offering and the fat. At that time Solomon held the feast for seven days, and all Israel with him, a very great assembly, from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of Egypt. And on the eighth day they held a solemn assembly, for they had kept the dedication of the altar seven days and the feast seven days. On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people away to their homes, joyful and glad of heart for the prosperity that the Lord had granted to David and to Solomon and to Israel his people. 2 Chronicles 7:1-10 Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for with a whole heart they had offered freely to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly. 1 Chronicles 29:9 I know, my God, that you test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you. 1 Chronicles 29:17
Consecration of the temple in the reign of King Hezekiah
And Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced because God had provided for the people, for the thing came about suddenly. 2 Chronicles 29:36
Deliverance of the Jews through Queen Esther
Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal robes of blue and white, with a great golden crown and a robe of fine linen and purple, and the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced. The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honor. And in every province and in every city, wherever the king’s command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, for fear of the Jews had fallen on them. Esther 8:15-17 And Mordecai recorded these things and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, obliging them to keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same, year by year, as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and gifts to the poor. Esther 9:20-22
The rebuilding of the temple and Jerusalem
And the people of Israel, the priests and the Levites, and the rest of the returned exiles, celebrated the dedication of this house of God with joy. Ezra 6:16 And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments came forward with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord, according to the directions of David king of Israel. And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the Lord, “For he is good,     for his steadfast love endures forever toward Israel.” And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy, so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people’s weeping, for the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was heard far away. Ezra 3:10-13 And they kept the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with joy, for the Lord had made them joyful and had turned the heart of the king of Assyria to them, so that he aided them in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel. Ezra 6:22 And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites in all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem to celebrate the dedication with gladness, with thanksgivings and with singing, with cymbals, harps, and lyres. Nehemiah 12:27
Other nations are encouraged to share Israel’s joy
Clap your hands, all peoples!     Shout to God with loud songs of joy! Psalm 47:1 They lift up their voices, they sing for joy;     over the majesty of the Lord they shout from the west. Therefore in the east give glory to the Lord;     in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise,     of glory to the Righteous One. But I say, “I waste away,     I waste away. Woe is me! For the traitors have betrayed,     with betrayal the traitors have betrayed.” Isaiah 24:14-16 “Rejoice with him, O heavens;     bow down to him, all gods, for he avenges the blood of his children     and takes vengeance on his adversaries. He repays those who hate him     and cleanses his people’s land.” Deuteronomy 32:43 Sing to the Lord a new song,     his praise from the end of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that fills it,     the coastlands and their inhabitants. Let the desert and its cities lift up their voice,     the villages that Kedar inhabits; let the habitants of Sela sing for joy,     let them shout from the top of the mountains. Isaiah 42:10-11 Then the heavens and the earth,     and all that is in them, shall sing for joy over Babylon,     for the destroyers shall come against them out of the north, declares the Lord. Jeremiah 51:48

The joy of the church

The church is to find joy in the salvation brought about by Jesus Christ’s faithful life and death, and by the power of His resurrection. The joy of Jesus Christ is independent from our circumstances and can be known even in times of adversity and persecution.
Joy at the coming of Jesus Christ
The Shepherds and the Angels
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:8-11 John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. John 3:27-29 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” John 8:56
Joy in the kingdom of God
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Galatians 5:22 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
The Parable of the Hidden Treasure
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Matthew 13:44 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. Romans 14:17-18 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. John 16:20-24
Jesus Christ promises joy to his disciples
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. John 15:9-11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:11-12 “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. Luke 6:22-23 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. John 17:13
Joy among believers
And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Acts 2:46-47 The Jerusalem Council But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders about this question. So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brothers. Acts 15:1-3 And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. 2 Corinthians 2:3 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me. Philippians 2:17-18
Joy experienced in relationship with Jesus Christ
Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 1 Peter 1:8-9 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Hebrews 12:22-24 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; Revelation 19:7
Joy experienced through conversion
And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God. Acts 16:33-34 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. Acts 8:38-39 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Romans 5:11
Joy experienced even in adversity
Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. Acts 5:41 “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. Luke 6:22-23 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me. Philippians 2:17-18
Paul’s Ministry to the Church
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, Colossians 1:24
Testing of Your Faith
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. James 1:2-3
Joy experienced by the apostles
Joy because of the believers’faith and obedience
For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. Romans 16:19 I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy. 2 Corinthians 7:4 Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved. Philippians 4:1 For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy. 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, 1 Thessalonians 3:9
Joy because of the believers’ love and concern
And not only by his coming but also by the comfort with which he was comforted by you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more. 2 Corinthians 7:7 So although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the one who did the wrong, nor for the sake of the one who suffered the wrong, but in order that your earnestness for us might be revealed to you in the sight of God. Therefore we are comforted. And besides our own comfort, we rejoiced still more at the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all. 2 Corinthians 7:12-13
Christ’s Example of Humility
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Philippians 2:1-2 For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you. Philemon 7
Joy because of the believers’partnership in the gospel
Always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:4-6

Conclusion

According to God’s Word joy can be described as a quality or attitude of delight and happiness, which is not merely based on human experience or circumstances but ultimately grounded in the work of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. While fun and happiness are dependent on certain circumstances, joy is not. It can be found even in times of adversity and persecution. Among the many situations in which joy is experienced, being in the presence of God is the ultimate joy. Jesus is our joy as it comes from and because of Him. He is the source of all joy.
