Kingdom Devotional – The Warnings of Jesus Unfolding Before Our Eyes

End Times Series – Part 10: The Scroll and the Lamb
Revelation 5 is one of the most breathtaking scenes in Scripture – a moment that reveals the identity, authority, and worthiness of Jesus Christ in a way nothing else does. If Revelation 4 shows the throne of God, Revelation 5 shows the only One worthy to bring God’s final plan to completion.
Let’s walk through it together.
1. The Scroll: God’s Final Plan for the End of the Age
John sees a scroll in the right hand of God, written on both sides and sealed with seven seals.
In ancient times, important legal documents were sealed this way – and only the rightful heir, the one with legal authority, could open them.
This scroll represents:
-
God’s final judgments
-
the unfolding of the end times
-
the inheritance of the Kingdom
-
the fulfillment of history
Opening the scroll means setting God’s final plan in motion.
A mighty angel calls out:
“Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?”
And the answer at first is devastating…
2. No One in All Creation Was Worthy
John writes that no one in heaven, on earth, or under the earth was found worthy to open the scroll or even look at it.
Not an angel.
Not the elders.
Not humanity.
No one has the righteousness, authority, or holiness to take the scroll from God Himself.
John breaks down in tears because if no one can open the scroll, God’s plan cannot move forward.
Evil would continue.
Redemption would stall.
The Kingdom would not come.
But then the scene shifts.
3. “Weep No More – The Lion Has Overcome.”
One of the elders comforts John with the greatest news heaven has ever announced:
“Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered.”
These titles show Jesus as
-
the promised Messiah
-
the royal King from David’s line
-
the victorious One who has overcome sin, death, and satan
He alone can open the scroll.
But when John turns to see the Lion…
he sees something unexpected.
4. The Conquering Lion Appears as a Slain Lamb
John sees a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain – a picture of Jesus’ sacrificial death and victorious resurrection.
The Lamb has:
-
seven horns → perfect authority and power
-
seven eyes → the fullness of the Holy Spirit
-
standing → He is alive, resurrected, triumphant
Jesus is both the Lion who conquers and the Lamb who was slain.
He approaches the throne and takes the scroll from God’s right hand – an act that no one else in all creation could do.
This is the moment that marks the beginning of the final unfolding of God’s plan.
5. Heaven Erupts in Worship
The moment Jesus takes the scroll, heaven explodes in worship.
The four living creatures and the elders fall before Him.
They hold:
-
harps → worship
-
golden bowls of incense → the prayers of the saints
Your prayers – your cry for justice, hope, healing, and Christ’s return – are part of heaven’s worship.
Then they sing a new song (Revelation 5:10 ESV):
“Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”
Jesus’ sacrifice purchased a global, multi-ethnic family – a Kingdom of priests who will reign with Him.
Then thousands upon thousands of angels join in:
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!”
And finally, every creature in the universe responds:
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
The chapter ends with holy silence and worship as the elders fall before Him.
What This Means for Us Today
-
Jesus alone is worthy.
No one else in all creation holds the authority to bring God’s plan to completion. -
The end times are not chaos – they are under Christ’s control.
The scroll is not random judgment; it is God’s perfect, ordered plan. -
Heaven sees Jesus as both Lamb and Lion.
His humility and His victory are inseparable. -
Our prayers matter.
They rise before God as incense and play a role in His unfolding plan. -
Worship is the response to Jesus’ worthiness.
All of heaven cannot stay silent and neither should we.

ABOUT OUR MINISTRY
We are a non-denominational Bible-believing Christian Ministry trained and equipped at the Christian Leaders Institute and Axx Bible College. Even though our Ministry is based on God's Word, the Bible, you need to approach our teachings like the Bereans and always study the Bible yourself to see if what we teach is aligned with what is written in the Bible.
Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11 NIV
We are only humans who 'stumble in many ways' (James 3:2) and we only 'know in part and we prophesy in part' (1 Corinthians 13:9).
