Introduction

Opening Bible Passage

So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.Mark 16:19 (WEB)

Ascension is not a vague spiritual idea in Scripture. It is a specific act of God in which a person is taken from earth into heaven. The Bible records only a few true ascensions, and each one reveals something about God’s authority, His Kingdom, and His purposes.

At the same time, history and tradition have introduced additional claims about people ascending to heaven that are not found in Scripture. For those who want to live grounded in truth, it is important to distinguish between what the Bible actually says and what has been added later.

Biblical ascension is rare, intentional, and always initiated by God – not achieved by human effort.

Ascension in the Bible

Enoch – The Man Who Walked with God

Enoch walked with God, and he was not found, for God took him.Genesis 5:24 (WEB)

Enoch’s story is brief but powerful. There is no record of his death. Instead, Scripture emphasizes his relationship with God. He walked with God, and then God took him.

By faith, Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn’t see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God. – Hebrews 11:5 (WEB)

His life shows that intimacy with God matters more than recognition or length of life.

Elijah – Taken Up in Power

As they still went on, and talked, behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated them both; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.2 Kings 2:11 (WEB)

Elijah’s departure was visible and dramatic. It confirmed his prophetic authority and marked a transition in God’s work through Elisha.

This moment reminds us that God is not limited by natural processes. He rules over life, death, and even departure from the earth.

Jesus Christ – The Ascended King

When he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight. Acts 1:9 (WEB)

Jesus’ ascension stands apart from all others. He did not simply go to heaven – He returned to the Father after completing redemption.

I came out from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father. John 16:28 (WEB)

His ascension is tied to His authority:

Yahweh says to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet.”Psalm 110:1 (WEB)

This is not just departure. It is enthronement.

Other Heavenly Encounters

Some were caught up into heavenly experiences, but not permanently.

I know a man in Christ who was caught up into the third heaven fourteen years ago – whether in the body, I don’t know, or whether out of the body, I don’t know; God knows. – 2 Corinthians 12:2 (WEB)

Paul describes a spiritual encounter, not a final ascension. The same applies to John’s visions in Revelation. These experiences reveal heaven, but they are not the same as being taken there permanently.

Unbiblical Ascension Claims

The Claim About Mary

Some traditions teach that Mary was taken bodily into heaven. However, this is not found anywhere in Scripture.

The Bible does not record her death or any ascension. This silence is significant. Every true ascension in Scripture is clearly documented.

Beyond the assumption of Mary, later tradition and apocryphal writings introduced other ascension‑like ideas that are not taught in Scripture. Some pseudepigraphal texts, such as the Ascension of Isaiah, describe prophets being spiritually “taken up” through the heavens in visionary journeys, but these are not canonical and do not describe literal, bodily ascension like Enoch, Elijah, or Jesus.

Later saints’ legends and mystical traditions also speak of holy men or women being bodily carried to heaven, and modern metaphysical systems talk about “ascended masters” overseeing humanity. Yet Scripture itself is very selective: only Enoch, Elijah, and Jesus are clearly described as being taken from earth into heaven in a special divine act. Anything beyond that must be tested by the clear teaching of Scripture rather than by tradition or legend.

When something as major as a bodily ascension occurs, Scripture does not leave it unmentioned.

The Biblical Standard

Now these things, brothers, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that in us you might learn not to think beyond the things which are written, that none of you be puffed up against one another.1 Corinthians 4:6 (WEB)

God calls His people to remain within what He has revealed. Adding teachings outside of Scripture can shift focus away from Christ and create confusion.

Kingdom Insight

Ascension is not something humans achieve. It is not a spiritual level or mystical attainment.

Every true ascension in the Bible was initiated by God for His purposes.

The central focus is Jesus. He ascended, and He now reigns.

and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,Ephesians 2:6 (WEB)

This is the believer’s position – not physical ascension, but spiritual union.

Kingdom Lessons

  • Ascension is initiated by God, not achieved by man.
  • Jesus’ ascension establishes His authority as King.
  • Not every spiritual claim is rooted in truth.
  • Believers are spiritually seated with Christ now.
  • Scripture must remain the final authority.

Reflection Questions

  • What stands out to you about the difference between biblical ascension and later traditions?
  • How does Jesus’ ascension shape your understanding of His authority?
  • Are there beliefs you hold that need to be re-examined in light of Scripture?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the clarity of Your Word. Help us to remain grounded in what You have spoken and not be led by ideas that go beyond it. We honor Jesus, who ascended and now reigns at Your right hand. Teach us to live with our hearts set on Him. Give us discernment, wisdom, and a deep love for truth. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

ABOUT OUR MINISTRY

We are a non-denominational Bible-believing Christian Ministry trained and equipped at the Christian Leaders Institute and Axx Bible College. Even though our Ministry is based on God's Word, the Bible, you need to approach our teachings like the Bereans and always study the Bible yourself to see if what we teach is aligned with what is written in the Bible.

Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11 NIV

We are only humans who 'stumble in many ways' (James 3:2) and we only 'know in part and we prophesy in part' (1 Corinthians 13:9).
