Character Bible Study Method

There are many different ways and methods to study the Bible – you can read the whole Bible, you can study the Bible book by book, chapter by chapter, verse by verse, thematically, topically etc. In this blog post we will teach you how do a character Bible study.

Here is how you do a Character Bible Study:

1. Pray

Before you start your Bible study, you should pray to God and ask Him to guide and help you in your Bible study.

2. Choose a Bible character

Decide on what Bible character you want to study. If you do a character study for the first time, it is recommended to choose a minor character of the Bible to avoid feeling overwhelmed with too much information.

3. Look up references

Search for scripture passages that reference your Bible Character using a concordance. Make a list of the references.

4. Make a list of the scripture passages to review

Study the Bible verses that mention your character. If there are too many verses, choose only the ones you believe will give the most and best information.

5. Study your Bible character

Study your Bible character by reading all scripture passages and taking notes. Ask questions such as Where did that person live? What major life events did they have? How was their relationship with God? What did they accomplish? How did they affect their family and nation?

6. Write a biographical sketch

Write a short biography about the character considering the following main points: the person’s name and its meaning, the place and time they lived, family background, occupation, the person’s influences, major events of their life, contemporaries and associates.

Use reference books such as a Bible atlas, encyclopedia or Bible commentaries to learn more about the customs/place the Bible character lived at that time.

7. Choose a key verse

Choose a key verse in the Bible that sums up the life of your Bible character. You may want to memorize this Scripture.

8. Make an application

Write down what life lessons you can learn from this person’s life. It might something you should do or you should avoid doing. Whether it’s good or bad, we can always learn something from our study of Bible characters.

9. End with prayer

You should always end your Bible study with prayer thanking God for what He has revealed to you. Ask God for helping you implement the lessons to your own life and to share them with other people.

The Character Bible Study Method is ideal for you if you want to learn more about a certain Bible character and learn a life lesson from them.

ABOUT OUR MINISTRY

We are a non-denominational Bible-believing Christian ministry trained and equipped at the Christian Leaders Institute. Even though our ministry is based on God's Word, the Bible, you need to approach our teachings like the Bereans and always study the Bible yourself to see if what we teach is aligned with what is written in the Bible.

Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11 NIV

We are only humans who 'stumble in many ways' (James 3:2) and we only 'know in part and we prophesy in part' (1 Corinthians 13:9).
