I felt led to create a series on Biblical virtues because I believe it is important to look at the kind of character God wants to form in us. Biblical virtues are the good qualities God wants to grow in our lives as we walk with Him. They are not just “nice behavior,” but fruit that shows a heart being shaped by the Holy Spirit. At the same time, vices are the wrong attitudes and habits that work against His purpose in us.
What Are Biblical Virtues?
The word virtue does actually appear in the Bible. In Philippians 4:8, we are told to think about things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and of good report, and it also mentions virtue. In 2 Peter 1:5, we are told to add to our faith virtue. This shows us that virtue is not just a religious idea, but a biblical one.
Virtues and Vices
The word vice is not commonly used in the Bible as a direct term, but the Bible does speak a lot about sins, transgressions, wickedness, evil, and the works of the flesh. Since Christian teaching often uses the language of virtues and vices, I will use that wording in this series for simplicity and clarity.In this series, I will be sharing about virtues like love, humility, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. I will also be talking about vices like pride, anger, envy, jealousy, greed, and selfishness.
If virtues are the qualities God builds in us, then vices are the opposite – the habits and attitudes that pull us away from God’s ways. Galatians 5:19-23 shows this contrast clearly by listing the works of the flesh and then the fruit of the Spirit. The works of the flesh include things like jealousy, anger, envy, and drunkenness, while the fruit of the Spirit includes love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Why This Matters
The Bible does not only show us what to avoid, but also the kind of heart and life God wants to build in His people. God is not only interested in what we do on the outside, but also in the condition of our hearts. As we grow in His Word, He helps us put off vice and put on virtue, little by little, by His grace.
For This Series
So this series is not just about information, but about allowing the Lord to shape us more and more into the image of Christ. In this series, we will look at what God says about character, holiness, and Kingdom living. We will not be chasing perfection in our own strength, but learning how to walk with the Lord in a way that pleases Him.
Closing Prayer
I hope these insights will encourage you and help you grow in Kingdom living, one step at a time. A simple prayer for this series could be: “Lord, teach me Your ways and form Your character in me. Amen.” The goal is not just information, but transformation.
