Learn about the Person and Nature of the Holy Spirit.

As we already know, the Holy Spirit is a divine person and the third person of the Trinity, not just a power or energy. In this post, we want to dig deeper into the person and nature of the Holy Spirit.

He is the Spirit of God.

As the Spirit of God He was actively and powerfully involved in the creation of the world. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:26 When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground. Psalm 104:30

He is actively involved in salvation.

1. Justification. When we surrender our life to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit indwells us and we have been saved from the penalty of sin. We become born-again believers. God declares us righteous. Our position in Christ is defined. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, Ephesians 2:8 2. Sanctification. The Holy Spirit works in us. By growing in our faith and by obedience to God, we are being saved from the power of sin. While we will not be perfect in this life, the Holy Spirit transforms us so we can become more and more like Christ. Sanctification is a life long process which requires a lot of grace from God because we will stumble and fall during this process. God declares us holy. This process refers to our condition to become like Christ. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 3. Glorification. When we persevere in hope and holiness until the second coming of Jesus Christ, we will be completely saved from the presence of sin. We will sin no more. By the power of God we will be instantaneously transformed into a perfectly moral and physical being eternally living in God’s presence in heaven. We will have a glorified resurrected body like Jesus Christ and live forever. We will be like Christ. God declares us glorious. This process refers to our expectation to be like Christ. The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. Romans 8:16-17 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. Philippians 3:21

He is our eternal helper.

Once we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit indwells us and will never leave us again. We have Him forever. He will go through it all with us – good, bad, and ugly. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:16-17

He gives us strength and power.

In Isaiah 11:1-2 we can read that Jesus, the Messiah, is prophesied and described as being empowered in the Spirit. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. Throughout the Bible we can find people that were filled with the Holy Spirit and acted under His power and strength. When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4 We have this exact same power and strength when we surrender to the leading of the Holy Spirit and follow God’s Will.

He is our comforter.

In this world we will have a lot of tribulations and trials and our life will not be easy. Jesus knew that when He left the earth after His resurrection, His disciples would grieve His absence. For this reason, He promised them the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Since then the Holy Spirit is our comforter who even helps us coming before God when we cannot. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, John 14:16 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26

He gives us spiritual gifts.

The Holy Spirit gives us believers spiritual gifts as He determines. We can read about the spiritual gifts in Romans 12:6–8; 1 Corinthians 12:4–11; and 1 Corinthians 12:28. They are available to all believers and we can ask the Holy Spirit to give us these gifts. These gifts are given to each one for the profit of all. We are to use them to edify and build up the body of Christ. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,  to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. 1 Corinthians 14:12
