The Identity of the Holy Spirit

When it comes to the Holy Spirit, there are so many misconceptions about the identity of the Holy Spirit. Some people think the Holy Spirit is an impersonal force or power that God makes available to all who follow Christ. But who is the Holy Spirit really? This answer can only be found in God’s Word itself. So let’s dig into Scripture to learn more about who the Holy Spirit really is.

The Holy Spirit is God.

In Acts 5:3–4 we can read: But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”
It is clear that lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God. Since the Holy Spirit is also like the Father and Jesus Christ addressed as God, it means the Holy Spirit is also God.
The characteristics of the Holy Spirit also make clear that the He is God. Like God he is omnipresent and omniscient.
Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
Psalm 139:7–8
these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
1 Corinthians 2:10–11
The Holy Spirit existed from the beginning like the Father and Jesus Christ. He was present at and involved in the creation.
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis 1:2
By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,
and by the breath of his mouth all their host. Psalm 33:6

The Holy Spirit is a divine person.

He possesses a mind, emotions, and a will.
The Holy Spirit thinks and knows.  these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 1 Corinthians 2:10
The Holy Spirit can be grieved. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30
The Holy Spirit intercedes for us. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26–27
The Holy Spirit makes decisions according to His own will. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. 1 Corinthians 12:7–11
The Holy Spirit is God and the third person of the Trinity. As God He functions as a Comforter, Helper, and Counselor that Jesus promised He would be.
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, John 14:16
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26
“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. John 15:26

ABOUT OUR MINISTRY

We are a non-denominational Bible-believing Christian ministry trained and equipped at the Christian Leaders Institute. Even though our ministry is based on God's Word, the Bible, you need to approach our teachings like the Bereans and always study the Bible yourself to see if what we teach is aligned with what is written in the Bible.

Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11 NIV

We are only humans who 'stumble in many ways' (James 3:2) and we only 'know in part and we prophesy in part' (1 Corinthians 13:9).
