What Are the Names and Titles of the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit has a lot of names and titles which we can find in Scripture. Most of them describe some function or aspect of His ministry.1. He is “the Spirit”.
Holy Spirit or the Spirit is the title that is commonly used for the Spirit of God. Some people use the pronoun “it” to refer to the Holy Spirit but this is actually not correct since the Holy Spirit is not simply a force or influence. He is a real divine person who can be resisted, quenched, and grieved. “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. Acts 7:51 Do not quench the Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30 The Holy Spirit is one with the Father and the Son and was present as an agent of creation. He breathed out creation. He also breathed out the record of the Scriptures. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis 1:1-2 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. Job 33:4 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:21 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16 The Father and the Son sent the spirit to mankind who acted on their behalf. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, John 14:16 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. John 16:7 He enables us to become a new birth, become born again. Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:5-6 In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit He only indwelled certain people who God had chosen and He could also depart. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Psalm 51:11 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the Lord tormented him. 1 Samuel 16:13-14 Since the New Testament when He indwelled the heart’s of the believers, all born-again believers will be indwelled by the Holy Spirit and sealed in Him. He will never depart but live in them eternally. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, Ephesians 1:13 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, John 14:162. He is the “Good Spirit”.
The Holy Spirit gives wonderful fruits and spiritual gifts to believers. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22 -23 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.1 Corinthians 12:1-11 In Luke 11:13 we can read “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts “to each one individually as he wills”. 1 Corinthians 12:11 The Holy Spirit not only gives good gifts but He is God’s good gift as we can read in Scripture. You gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst. Nehemiah 9:20 He can teach us the will and ways of the Father. Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Psalm 25:4 The Holy Spirit who is good and holy desires us to lead us on God’s good and holy paths. As believers we should walk in the Spirit, be guided by the Spirit, and read and apply Scripture in daily living. Several Scriptures teach us about it. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground! Psalm 143:10 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:25 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. Romans 8:143. He is “the Eternal Spirit.”
Some people think that the Holy Spirit appeared for the first time after Jesus’ resurrection but this doesn’t fit with scriptural teaching. In Scripture we find several verses that clearly describe the Holy Spirit as always being present in the Holy Trinity and being eternal. He was an active part of God’s creation. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis 1:1-2 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:26 He is called “eternal Spirit” in the New Testament. how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Hebrews 9:14 We are “sealed” in Him. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:13-14 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 2 Corinthians 1:22 Once the Holy Spirit indwells us believers, He is the guarantee of our spiritual inheritance. When we sin as believers, we shut down the workings of the Holy Spirit in our lives which leads to losing of our blessings and and joy in His presence, but He will not leave us. Jesus said that the Spirit would be with us forever. He will still be there when Jesus comes back a second time and there will be a New Heaven and a New Earth. He will always move in our hearts to glorify and worship the Father and the Son. until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest. Isaiah 32:15 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. John 16:14Rejoicing in Heaven
1After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, 2 for his judgments are true and just; for he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality, and has avenged on her the blood of his servants.” 3 Once more they cried out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; 8 it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. 9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” 10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Revelation 19:1-104. He is “the Lord.”
As Christians we call both the Father and the Son “Lord” but in Scripture we can read that the Holy Spirit is called “Lord” as well. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17 In the Nicene Creed we can read “We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. Who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified….” “The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me; his word is on my tongue. 2 Samuel 23:2 Since the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all called “Lord”, which means they are all three divine persons in the Trinity. Calling the Holy Spirit “Lord” affirms His personhood and divinity in the Trinity. Just like the Father and the Son, we should worship Him. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24 As our Lord we should let the Holy Spirit lead us in our lives and obey His promptings instead of resisting, quenching, and grieving Him. “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. He is the Comforter / Counselor / Advocate / Paraclete.
The Holy Spirit is our helper in many different ways. In Greek we find the word parakletos in reference to the Spirit which means helper, comforter, counselor, and advocate. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He promised to send the Spirit to comfort, console, and guide the followers of Christ. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, John 14:16 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. John 16:7 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. Isaiah 11:26. He is the Author of Scripture.
The Holy Spirit inspired the authors of all 66 books of the Bible to record exactly what He breathed into their hearts and minds. For this reason, the Bible is God-breathed by the Holy Spirit. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:21 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:167. He is the Convictor of Sin.
The Holy Spirit convicts us in our hearts that we are sinners and not worthy to stand before a holy God. He invites us to repent of our sins and seek God’s righteousness. He teaches us that judgment is certain and will come to all men one day. If you deny these truths, you rebel against the Holy Spirit’s conviction. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. John 16:7–118. He is the Seal.
The Holy Spirit is God’s seal on His people. He comes to indwell or take up residence in the believer. He identifies God’s people as His inheritance, which Christ has promised us and secured for us at the cross. Due to the seal of the Holy Spirit we are assured of our salvation and become children of God. Nobody can break God’s seal. and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 2 Corinthians 1:22 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 2 Corinthians 5:5 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:13–14 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. Romans 8:15-16 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Galatians 4:4-6 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:309. He is the Guide.
The Holy Spirit guides believers to know and understand the truth of God’s Word. To unbelievers God’s truth is foolishness because it is spiritually discerned. People that don’t belong to Christ and don’t have the Holy Spirit indwelling them have no guide who teaches them to know and understand God’s Word. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. John 16:13 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:1410. He is the Indweller of Believers.
If a person becomes a true believer in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit resides in the heart of them. This indwelling is a distinct characteristic of the regenerated person. Once the Holy Spirit resides in our hearts, He will direct us, guide us, comfort us, influence us, intercede for us, produce the fruit of the Spirit in us, and provide an intimate connection between God and us. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:9–11 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. Ephesians 2:21–22 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 1 Corinthians 6:19 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22–2311. He is the Intercessor.
The Holy Spirit is our intercessor as He intercedes and prays for us in our hearts. We often don’t know how and what to pray when we stand before God. He does it with “wordless groans”. When we go through trials, He will help us bearing them and in prayer. He comforts us, He speaks to us, and strengthens us. He is our friend who helps us bare our burdens. He brings our prayers to God and interprets to God what is really in our heart. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:2612. He is the Teacher.
Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He promised His disciples that the Spirit would teach them “all things” and bring to their remembrance the things He said while He was with them. The Holy Spirit teaches us how to apply Scripture to our life, searches the depths of God and longs to reveal to us the wisdom and ways of our heavenly Father. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. 1 Corinthians 2:13 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 1 Corinthians 2:1013. He is the Witness.
The Spirit is the witness to the fact, that we are God’s children, that Jesus and His disciples performed miracles and were sent by God, and that the books of the Bible are God’s Word. He also gives believers spiritual gifts to witness to us and the world that we are God’s children. The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, Romans 8:16 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. Hebrews 2:4 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, Hebrews 10:1514. He is the “Spirit of …”.
Many of the Holy Spirit’s names or titles begin with the words, “Spirit of.” Some of these titles describe His personhood in the Trinity. He is: – The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord (Isaiah 61:1) – The Spirit of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2; Acts 5:9) – The Spirit of God (Genesis 1:2; 1 Corinthians 2:11; Job 33:4) – The Spirit of the living God (2 Corinthians 3:3) – The “Spirit of your Father” (Matthew 10:20) – The Spirit of Christ and the Spirit of his Son (Romans 8:9; 1 Peter 1:11; Galatians 4:6) He is also called: – The Spirit of life (Romans 8:2) – The Spirit of grace (Hebrews 10:29) – The Spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:10) – The Spirit of truth (John 14:17; 15:26) – The Spirit of holiness (Romans 1:4) – The Spirit of wisdom and revelation (Ephesians 1:17) – The Spirit of justice or judgment (Isaiah 28:6) – The Spirit of fire or burning (Isaiah 4:4) – The Spirit of glory (1 Peter 4:14) In Isaiah 11:2 we can read about the Spirit of the Lord, Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. This is sometimes called “the seven spirits of God”. Some scholars say these are symbolic names, because the number seven refers not to seven separate spirits, but rather the completeness and perfection of the Holy Spirit.
