The Name of Jesus

First, we want to study Jesus’ name, where it comes from, and what it means.

JESUS

Jesus means “Deliverer, Savior” and is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Yeshua, which was originally Hoshea in the Old Testament (Numbers 13:8, Numbers 13:16). Later Moses changed the name to Yehoshua (Numbers 13:16, 1 Chronicles 7:27). After Israel’s exile to Babylon, the name became Yeshua, from which we get the Greek form Iēsous and the English translation Jesus. This name was given to our Lord because of His mission to “save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 Even though Jesus Christ has been given many other names and titles in the Bible like Emmanuel, Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, etc.,  and many other rulers and leaders of the world great, conquerors, bold, magnificent, mighty, etc., the Son of God is humble and content to call Himself Savior. Many people before and after the birth of the biblical Jesus have been named Jesus but only Jesus, the Son of God, is named Jesus Christ or Christ Jesus.

CHRIST

The name or title Christ comes from the Greek word meaning “anointed one“. The word is derived from the Greek verb χρίω (chrī́ō), meaning “to anoint.” So Christ is the Greek word for the Hebrew  word “Messiah“, which is Jesus’ official title. In the New Testament we can find the title “Messiah” linked to Jesus’ name 514 times. Here are some examples: Acts 17:3, Acts 18:5, Matthew 16:15-16. The name Christ/Anointed One/Messiah is very significant because it refers to the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah. There are prophecies about a Messiah throughout the Old Testament: Psalm 22, Deuteronomy 18:15-18, Genesis 3:15

Jesus Christ is our Savior because He saves us from the guilt of our sins by dying on the cross and shedding His blood as atonement. He is the Anointed One because He was anointed and sent by His Father to deliver us from the dominion of sin. He gave us the Holy Spirit who sanctifies us and gives us eternal life. Jesus Christ will take us out of the world to rest with Him and give us a glorious body at the last day. Then we will never have to suffer from the consequences of our sins. Instead, we will live with Jesus Christ forever. If we call on Jesus Christ’s name, we will be saved.

For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  Romans 10:13

ABOUT OUR MINISTRY

We are a non-denominational Bible-believing Christian Ministry trained and equipped at the Christian Leaders Institute. Even though our Ministry is based on God's Word, the Bible, you need to approach our teachings like the Bereans and always study the Bible yourself to see if what we teach is aligned with what is written in the Bible.

Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11 NIV

We are only humans who 'stumble in many ways' (James 3:2) and we only 'know in part and we prophesy in part' (1 Corinthians 13:9).
